Give me Recommendations. Now. (Please?)

I've never spent much time in London, and I've never even been to Rome. You people keep telling me places to go, but I'm not smart enough to write them down. Well here's your chance.

Post those ideas and recommendations as comments to this post (click comments below) and... I'll go to those places and do those things. And probably post the good ones on this main page, so you can be ever so slightly more famous than you are right now. London especially, because we have a whole week there, and absolutely no obligations.

That means you, Nolan, Ariel, Colleen, Lydia, Rachel, and all the rest of you who have spent a significant amount of time in the UK.

Note: We're staying in Marble Arch, right by Hyde Park.

London is amazing! Make sure you check out Harrod's department store, it is huge! and the tower of london is pretty damn cool. Stay away from any boat tours down the thames though, very very boring.

Nolan says:

Go to the saatchi gallery
even thought that costs a few pounds
which the public galleries dont
if nothing else, you'll sound smarter for haveing attended them all
if only b/c they're ar the cener of conflict in post-modern art
but clothing wise you need to go to
"the top shop"

London is fun! Go on the London Eye - like the best time of my life but basically thats cus i love ferris wheels and this one is really big. if you wanna do that you should make reservations (you can call), you still have to wait in line when you get there for like 30 minutes or something, but its faster.

Also, stuff in London is really expensive (compared to the rest of England)...its kinda bullshit. but the river is pretty at night.

if you like palaces, go to Hampton Court (like 30 minutes by train outside London). Henry the 8th, and William and Mary lived there...its a pretty big place, kinda not well organized, but still fun cus you can go inside (unlike Buckingham Palace).

and yeah, go to the Tower of London. just do it.

something else -
drink the guinness. (extra cold) cus it's 10 times better there.

be aware that a lot of pubs close at 11 in England.
and may stop serving food a lot earlier.

eat the fish and chips and get your chips with mayo.

buy some beer and just drink it on the street, cus yeah thats legal in the UK.

they make some good pizza in the italian places if you get sick of fried english shit.

tea is overrated. stick with the beer.

also, you may come across a dessert called the spotted dick. its actually just a raisin muffin with some pudding. it's alright. the name makes it better, of course.

Hey Zach, greetings from Saigon! Hope you are having a great time in my city.

Go to Waterloo and take a train to Virginia Water and check out my stomping grounds--like where I went to school.

Seriously, here are some London tips: Regent's Park outdoor theatre, Slug in the Lettuce, Tower Bridge, London Eye, get a suit made on Jermyn Street, buy some cheese at Paxton and Whitfield, Go to Floral Street for the best of London brands: Hackett, Camper, Paul Smith, and Ted Baker. Queens Walk and the Globe. Wagamamma, Wagamamma, and oh yes, Wagamamma. Fortumn and Mason for tea is a must. Wembley Market for the more adventurous.

Outside London, my dear old Egham (Virgina Water) is as great a place as any and its where the magna carta was signed. I think that's funking awesome. Plus Legoland is close. If you go to Staines, pick up a lady or two at the Cock. I'm serious. If you make it to the Red Lion on Village Road say hi to Frank and Roy, the M25 motorway workers.

Pizza Express. It only sounds bad.
Boots. It's the best drugstore ever. Sainsbury's is way better than Tesco's.

Watch GMTV on ITV, should be Channel 5, in the mornings. It's the best morning program ever and its way popular.

Other than that, enjoy, treat my dear city well. Can't wait to see you and hear about your trip.

Cheers,
Josh

zach. put on some shoes. start walking (breadcrumbs, map, or good retracing skills are helpful). you'll end up running into a lot of random, amazing things that way.

everybody else seems to have covered the big stuff, which, in my personal opinion, competes with the random nooks in coolness and definitely trails in terms of adventure.

london eye = big fuckin ferris wheel where you are stuck in a confined space (essentially a big capsule) with a bunch of strangers for 30minutes = overrated

Not a big fan of harrods either....try marks and spencer....or selfridges.
Crys, you will find an H & M on almost every damn corner. They started in Europe, so they have way more than we do. I spent 4 hours in the TopShop at Oxford Circus, as well as miss selfridges which has a bunch of vintage-y stuff, so just keep that in mind. Zara is good too. A bit more expensive though.

I say hit Portobello Rd for the market, I haven't been to it in a few years but it was enjoyable. You can look for the blue door from the "Notting Hill" movie while in Notting Hill if you are a nerd like i was.

I was going to suggest the open air theatre in regents, but it is closed for winter by now i think.

So that is all I have to offer for now, I hope it is grand. Enjoy.

well...I'm sure if you're by hyde park (the original) you've already hit up kensington gardens. That's where I spent much of my time in london just sun bathing and reading...god...I miss london...le sigh...
Also, if you're into seeing some yuppies and cool shopping, take a train from the waterloo station to Wimbledon (yup...that's right...where they play tennis...volley!)...ahem...so yeah...kensington gardens and such...also...all of the museums are free in london...FREE...so go be a jew.

I love Portobello Rd. market, definitely do that. Saturday is the big market day, but a lot of the vendors are there throughout the week as well, and its less crowded than Saturday's.

One of my other favorite things was the sculpture of Peter Pan in Hyde Park. You are close enough, take a walk around the park and check it out.

I didn't do the London Eye, it's really expensive and seemed kind of dumb. Another option is to go to St. Paul's Cathedral and climb the stairs to the top. A bit of a hike up, but it is worth it. Why ride a giant ferris wheel when you can get the same panoramic view from the top of a 300 year old cathedral. awesome.

You seem to have a lot of pointers already, so I'll leave it at that. Drink tea in the afternoons, it's fun.
ah and no matter how hard you try, you will most likely go broke there. It's inevitable.

cheers
